AFC Cup champions open at home
KUALA LUMPUR – AFC Cup holders Shabab Al Ordun will kick-off the defence of their title against Yemeni outfit Shaab Hadramaout in Jordan on March 11.
Following the official draw for the 2008 competition held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, the defending champions, who defeated compatriots Al Faisaly 2-1 on aggregate in the 2007 AFC Cup Final, were draw in Group C alongside 2006/07 Oman champions Al Nahda and Al Najma, winners of the Bahrain King’s Cup.
India was the first country drawn and national champions Dempo were the first club out of the hat. The Goa-based side were the first team out of the hat and they were grouped with Oman outfit Sur, Al Ansar from Lebanon and 29-time Bahrain champions Al Muharraq, runners-up at the 2006 AFC Cup.
Dempo’s compatriots East Bengal were pooled in Group B along with Al Ahli Sana’a, Lebanon’s Safa and Jordan’s Al Wihdat, who will be looking to be the third side from the Hashemite Kingdom to win the competition after Al Faisaly and Shabab Al Ordun.
Meanwhile, in the East half of the draw Singapore’s Home United, semi-finalists in the inaugural AFC Cup have been pooled in Group D with Hong Kong’s South China, Malaysian champions Kedah and Victory, who were denied a hat-trick of Maldives league titles by New Radiant.
New Radiant, who reached the last four of the 2005 AFC Cup, face Singapore Armed Forces, Kitchee from Hong Kong and Malaysia’s other representatives Perak in Group E.
