AFC 1st Leg Quarterfinals Match - Perak F.A. vs Safa FC

>> Monday, September 15, 2008

Perak will face SAFA FC from Lebanon on 16th September 2008 at Perak Stadium for the first leg quarterfinal match of AFC Cup. After finishing an empty hand this season, Perak want to get at least to the final match of the AFC Cup. Everything has changed now, from players to formation. We will face SAFA FC without Carlos Caceres and Jorge Munoz due to their departure back to Chile. Stave Darby made a total change for this match, placing several young players and new tactical in formation. Due to demanding from fans to the old formation, Stave Darby change Perak formation from 3-4-1-2 to a 4-5-1 formation. SAFA FC has a good and fast players and this formation will help to stop every attacking form SAFA FC. This formation is also suitable for players that we have now. During our rest period after the season ends, we have tested this formation with several friendly matches. Players have shown a good response from this new formation. While this season only left with these two games for AFC Cup. Perak will have a new face for next season. Every position in Perak F.A. will be filling by new candidates to bring 2009 season challenge.

The second leg quarterfinal match will be held on 23rd September 2008 at SAFA FC home ground.

FAM no to Foreigners - THE STAR News

FAM no to foreigners ( The Star )

By ERIC SAMUEL

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s official! Foreign players can pack their bags and head home soon.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) Council have decided to indefinitely shut the door on foreign players in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) from next season.

FAM deputy president Khairy Jamaluddin, while admitting that the MSL had failed to meet its objectives since its launch in 2004, said the foreign players had failed to contribute positively to the growth of Malaysian football.

The MSL was launched with the aim of reviving Malaysia’s ailing football fortunes in the region and to promote positive changes in the overall structure, organisation and attitude of the officials and players.

Khairy said many of the foreign players signed up were not of high standard and failed to draw in the crowds.

What he failed to add was that the poor financial management of their own affiliates had prompted FAM to take action.

Ironically, the FAM had slammed the door shut on foreign players from 1999 to 2001 because the foreign players then were of very high standard and had put the local players in the shade.

Khairy said the council were unanimous in their decision to adopt the findings of the two-day brain-storming session organised by FAM last month. “It is for an indefinite period,” said Khairy of their decision to do away with foreign players at a press conference yesterday.

“Teams who have foreign players with existing contracts will have to terminate those deals. It is a unanimous call and no one (from the council) objected to it. In fact, Selangor and Kedah, who have qualified for the AFC Cup next year, also agreed that priority should be give to developing and strengthening the league.” Khairy later revealed the format for the new season, which he said would kick off in January.

The Super League and Premier League will still comprise 14 teams each.

Kuala Muda Naza and KL Plus FC have been promoted to the top flight while Sarawak have been relegated to the Premier League.

FAM Cup champions and runners-up – Team of Terengganu and Johor Baru Municipal Council – have been promoted to the Premier League.

The other notable change for the new season is the match days. Super League matches will be played on Wednesdays and Sundays while the Premier League games will be on Mondays and Fridays. Khairy said this was to avoid clashing with the English Premier League (EPL) matches and other popular events that are normally held on Saturdays.

Other matters:

  • Each Super League and Premier League team must field an Under-20 player in their starting line-up.
  • The FA Cup tournament will comprise of 28 teams (Super League and Premier League teams only).
  • The Malaysia Cup format for the new season has yet to be determined.
  • The President’s Cup will now be an Under-20 tournament (previously Under-21).
  • The Youth Cup (Under-19) has been scrapped.
  • The 2010 Sukma in Malacca will be an Under-20 competition (previously Under-23).
  • The national women’s football tournament to be revived next year.
  • The Felda Futsal League for men and women will comprise nine circuits.
  • Harimau Muda, under coach K. Rajagopal, will continue playing in the Premier League next season.
  • No maximum or minimum wage ceiling for players next season.

Steve Darby Interview

Perak F.A. Coach, Steve Darby has agreed to answer some of the questions that fans have written in with.

"I am always happy to answer fans questions, especially if they put their name to the question. From experience it’s not worth answering questions from people who hide behind pseudonyms as many Malaysian friends have told me that these can be mischievous people who have no love for the game and just wish to cause trouble. Also sadly some of the press have written incorrect facts about various situations. Try not to believe “anonymous” sources. Real journalists verify stories." - Steve Darby

Q: Why did Keita Manjou not play for Perak this year?

Initially we felt we would not have enough money to employ any foreign players for this season. Then after some excellent financial management by Dato Muhiyuddin we managed to find the funds to employ 2 foreigners. We offered Keita and Traore contracts on exactly the same money that they had been on the previous season. They both rejected the contracts citing “personal reasons at home” We had to respect that and move on to source other foreigners. Neither Keita or Traore played competitive football from September 2007 to May 2008 as we still have their ITC (International Transfer Certificate). Keita has recently transferred to Brunei for a salary way beyond our ability to pay and Traore has asked to come back but wants a pay raise of 40% on last year. Again we just do not have the money.

Q: Did we approach any leading local players?

Yes we did, we approached 5 international players. Three of whom told us that they had been offered twice what we could afford. Also one of our players left for another club on a 50% pay rise. I have no problems with players accepting higher wages as this is their source of income in a short and highly fraught career. How may of people reading this would not accept double the salary to move to a new job? You can’t offer money you don’t have!

Q: Why did we have a small squad?

It was my decision to sign 18 senior players with 5 youth players in support. I felt fans would rather see players such as Nanthakumar, Khalid, or Hardi than watch a squad of 28 made up of average players.

What Perak fans must learn to accept is that we have a budget which is the same as Penang and less than Sarawak and more than 50% less than many other teams, including at least 4 in the Premier League. Two teams in the league have had over 9 foreigners, do you realise how much that costs?

One National Coach said to me that in reality Perak have been over- achieving in the last 3 seasons compared to the budget they have to spend!

Let’s get realistic about the football business, Derby County will not win the BPL, only Manchester Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal etc will win. They have the largest budget, hence bigger squads of better players. Until a major sponsor is found we will continue to try do what Everton and West Ham do. And as you see Perak qualified for the first time ever into the knockout stages of the AFC Cup. A great achievement when we concluded the group stage beating Singapore who had 4 foreigners playing. Again manipulation of the media can change a story. SAF left 2 players out of their first eleven, as we did (Khalid and Nantha both injured). We are also the first foreign team to beat a Singapore team on the artificial surface.

Believe me I would love to have 2 Malaysian International strikers on the bench in a game, but we cannot fund this depth of squad.

We were undone by the amazing schedule that was impinged upon us with12 games in 34 days plus thousands of kilometers of travel. This schedule was drawn up after the season started and after we found out our striker Fakri was taken off us to play for the National Team.

In specific we lost both our strikers (Khalid and Carlos) for 6 games at the same time, recently we have lost up to 5 players with a virus, in fact we took only 13 players to Brunei as we had 1 suspended (Khairi) 1 injured (Khalid) and 3 with virus (Danial, Rozali and Mat Nor). Normally we could fill the bench with young players but we found out many of the young players did not have passports. We actually had Hamsani on the bench as an outfield player!

Q: You and the players receive criticism on the internet.

Sadly like most players I no longer read the forum sections of internet sites. It’s pity as some of the sites like Yob4ever are top class. With their information and photos, obviously driven by genuine fans. But again why should I or the players read personal vindictive abuse written by invisible people? Constructive criticism is fine, but I have had many genuine Malaysian fans come up to me and the players apologizing for some of he comments made, and suggesting these people don’t even go to the game! You will find the people who have played or coached at a decent level make valid critisism, but some of these critics have obviously never kicked a ball past school days.

I was told that one “expert” was saying how bad our back three were playing in one game, in fact in that game and for the previous three we had been playing 4-5-1, So much for the ability to read a game.

Alex Ferguson once commented on a similar situation in UK when he said why don’t all the experts who critisise his coaching methods get off their backsides and put their knowledge to where it matters by helping kids or school teams who have no coaches. Then we would see how difficult job it is. And they would be doing something positive with their time. When I go to get my car fixed I don’t tell the mechanic what to do and I certainly don’t write comments about him on the net!

You also never see true professional coaches abusing each other, so again perhaps some of the criticism can be filed under fiction?

But to be balanced there are so many genuine fans out there who are the silent majority. The genuine support does help players and they appreciate the real fans. I know that the players and the staff never say No to any autograph or photo request. And a number of players do charity work behind the scenes they just don’t brag about it.

We also open all our training sesions to local coaches and have photo access through our blog so fans can see what the players do.

Q: Why don’t you critisise your players in public

I never critisise individual players in public. WE win together and WE lose together. Believe me criticism goes on in the dressing room, but that’s where it stays. I also don’t think it makes a player improve if you name and shame him in the press. Your job is to get the best out of your players and it’s a complex task with so many variable personalities in a team. I find it pathetic when coaches say “they didn’t listen to my instructions”…that means they weren’t explained well enough.

Q: Why don’t Perak spend more money

If you are driving a motor bike, why don’t you buy a Mercedes? Because you haven’t got the money. It’s so easy to say get the money! I know Dato Muhiyuddin is working long hours to acquire the money needed to fund a club this size.

There are many debts left over from previous administrations that are having to be paid now. Most people (quite rightly) don’t know the true economic situation of Perak. If they did they would be shocked. The recent publicity about the 560,000Rm owed to the Stadium is only a fraction of the debts.

What I do know is that we have saved over a million ringitt this year by reducing the foreign player budget, traveling costs, eliminating overnight stays, flying with smaller amounts of players by Air Asia and getting buses everywhere else.

Q: Do you think Perak has been affected by match fixing?

Yes! Our players have been approached and in turn they did the correct thing and informed the management who in turn confidentially informed FAM. But it immediately puts pressure on a player, and if they make a mistake cynics suggest it’s on purpose. Every player makes mistakes, just look at Rise or Ronaldo in the recent ECL semi finals.

Match fixing both saddens and disgusts me. Maybe we would have been champions last year if all the results had been honest? That’s no disrespect to Kedah who are an excellent side but did bookies get to opposition teams to lose by big scores, and to be fair this could be targeted at some of our opponents. I was even asked the question did I realise that the referee who refereed the Malaysia Cup Final has never refereed again. There may be a valid reason, but people think the worst when match fixing scenarios rise.

My personal view is that no Perak player has sold a game. I back them 100%. As I told them we should welcome investigation as if you are innocent you have nothing to fear. If they are found clean then this should also be publicized to exonerate them in the public eye.

Q: Are you happy with season?

No! You are never happy when you lose any game. I hate losing, I don’t sleep after we have lost! We made mistakes (including me) some players excelled, some didn’t. But again I re iterate every player gives 100% they hate losing; it’s their passion, their livelihood. They all want to win every game, but as in all leagues in the world this doesn’t happen.

Q: Where can Perak get better

I will continue to complain about the quality of our pitch (which deprives fans of good football) and the non existent training facilities, especially for our young players. You only get better by quality practice. Is it co incidence that all the best teams have outstanding training facilities? The facilities in Perak are a disgrace. Everybody wants professional results but nobody is prepared to give us professional preparation. Malaysia will continue to lag behind Japan and Korea until every club has top class training facilities. If its crime to try to set high standards then I am a criminal.

Also if we are to be honest we need a larger “Front Office” including professional marketing and media officers who in turn generate funds. Our office staff are grossly over worked. But it’s the same story, under capitalized organisations straddled with large debts.

Q: Malaysia Cup

We have had 9 players in full training for the Malaysia Cup. We have lost players to various national teams and to Sukma. I must add that I believe PFA did the corect thingin sending the Presidents Cup squad to Sukma as this is a developmental competition. The Coach Yee Fat has done a tremendous job with very yong players.

As all fans know the Malaysian cup is a "different ball game" and many teams change for it. Due to economics we will be keeping the same squad but going all out to better our final appearance last year.

AFC Cup Draw Result

>> Saturday, May 24, 2008

AFC News - KUALA LUMPUR

Bahrain league champions Muharraq face a tricky assignment in the quarter-finals of this year’s AFC Cup after being drawn against Malaysian treble winners Kedah. The knockout stage draw, held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, produced East-West meetings in three of the four quarter-finals with Malaysia’s other representatives, Perak, facing Lebanese side Safa. Singapore are also represented by two teams with double winners Singapore Armed Forces meeting Oman’s Al Nahda while Home United take on Indian champions Dempo.

The first legs of the quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday, September 16 with the return matches held a week later on September 23. Saturday’s draw also determined the semi-final match-ups and raised the possibility of either an all-Singaporean or all-Malaysian final. The winner of the Muharraq-Kedah tie will face the winner of the SAF-Al Nahda match in one semi-final while the winner of the Perak-Safa clash will take on either Dempo or Home United match in the other last four match.

The semi-final matches will take place on October 7 and 21 with the two legs of the final slated for October 31 and November 7.

QUARTER-FINAL DRAW

Perak (Malaysia) vs Safa (Lebanon)
Armed Forces (Singapore) vs Al Nahda (Oman)
Dempo (India) vs Home United (Singapore)
Muharraq (Bahrain) vs Kedah (Malaysia)

AFC NEWS - We're not there yet, warns Darby

>> Saturday, May 03, 2008

IPOH - Perak head coach Steve Darby is refusing to take anything for granted even though his side moved a step closer to a place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup after a 3-0 win over New Radiant on Wednesday.

Midfielder Jorge Munoz grabbed a brace while Razali Omar added a third deep in stoppage time to secure victory and move them on to ten points in Group E.

"I wish I can say that we are in the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup but the truth is we are not there yet," said Darby.

"We picked up the full points tonight as we should since we are playing at home but I felt that our performance was a lot better in the first half when we were playing against 11 men than when we were playing against eight.

"We took our time with the advantage that we had although having said that, I'm just glad that we won the points that we needed."

New Radiant head coach Gerd Zeise in the meantime was shocked with the loss of the three players in one game and insisted that the outcome would have been different had his side retained 11 players on the pitch. New Radiant's task was always going to be difficult after they had Sabah Ibrahim, Ahmad Mohamad and Daniel Mbock all dismissed in the first half.

"I didn't really see what happened and was not too sure about the altercation," said Zeise. "We tried to make a game of it against Perak here and we tried a few things tonight. It was just unfortunate that it did not pan out as planned."

"We would have been very happy with a draw which I believe that we are capable of but in the end this is football and at the end of the day it is how we play for the full 90 minutes of the game which will decide the final outcome."

Pride back as Perak edge Kitchee - AFC News

>> Thursday, April 03, 2008

AFC NEWS
Perak bounced back from their 6-1 defeat by SAFFC with a 2-1 win over Kitchee.

IPOH - Mario Berios' last minute strike helped Malaysian Super League outfit Perak move within three points of AFC Cup Group E pacesetters Singapore Armed Forces after edging out Hong Kong's Kitchee 2-1 on Wednesday.

Perak coach Steve Darby was eager for his side to restore some pride after they had suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of SAF in their last outing.

And they made the ideal start when they opened the scoring after just 11 minutes as Mohamad Hardi Jaafar fired home from the edge of the area.

But Kitchee's Macedonian midfielder Goran Stankovski looked to have earned a point for the visitors after netting a deserved equaliser with 17 minutes remaining, but Berios snatched all three for Perak against the run of play.

Perak were without strikers Khalid Jamlus and Carlos Caceres through injury, but still managed to take the lead as Jaafar fired home from the edge of the area past goalkeeper Li Jian after the Kitchee defence failed to clear.

Malaysian international Jaafar was denied by Li seven minutes later, while at the other end Hugues Nanmi saw his long range set piece saved by Perak goalkeeper Hamsani Ahmad.

The goal seemed to inspire Kitchee into life and Stankovski planted a close range header just wide nine minutes before the break.

Hamsani almost handed Kitchee an equaliser a minute after the break as he dropped Leung Chi Win's corner, but Liu Quankun was unable to react with the goal at his mercy.

Kitchee continued to dominate as Hamsani denied visiting captain Chan Siu Ki, while at the other end after a rare counterattack from the home side, Mohd Nor Ismail fired over.

The equaliser finally arrived with 17 minutes remaining as Stankovski pounced on a loose ball and roll it into the empty net with Hamsani on the ground after a collision and his defence unable to clear.

Kitchee continued to press for a winner, but as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Berrios beat Li with a powerful drive.

Formation

>> Saturday, January 12, 2008

A number of fans have asked me to talk about systems and tactics. As you will see it’s not a simple subject. But as the great Bill Shankly the ex Liverpool manager used to say, it doesn’t matter what system you use if your Goalkeeper lets one through his legs or your striker misses from one metre.

Also Roy Hodgson who has coached Inter Milan and Switzerland recently said when appointed to Fulham, insisting he doesn't subscribe to any particular dogma, saying his style is determined by the players available and prevailing circumstances. "It's dangerous to talk about styles of play," he warns. "I'll never forget [Rinus] Michels talking at a Uefa conference many years ago. He was being lauded for being the first man to play this wonderful total football and he said, 'listen, I wanted to play winning football - if my team were losing 1-0 with 15 minutes to go and the opponents were camped in their own half, I wasn't at all adverse to putting my big centre-forward on and crashing the ball up to him to play the knock-downs'."

Also Charles Hughes one of the great coaching educationalists opens his book on coaching by saying it doesn’t matter what system you pay if the players can’t pass or control a ball!

WHAT IS LONG BALL?

I hear people say we play long ball, I also hear people say we play a short passing game as we have South Americans. Before we try to guess who is right, let’s ask the question what is a long ball? If a pass over 10m is not a short pass then is an 11 m pass a long ball? If a pass is shorter than 30m is it a short pass? As no one ever says there is a medium pass, just short and long. My belief is the distinction is not short or long but good or bad! The technical principles of a pass are its ACCURACY and WEIGHT. In essence a good pass is when a player can receive it and either pass again first time (or shoot). Most good passes are forward and on diagonals.

If a team is playing with a back 4 that pushes up to the half way line then there will be a large space for a forward to run into, hence a long pass is good. Especially if you have players like Keita Manjou, Sutee Suksomkit or Indra Shadan who all had great pace. However if you have a different style of player who can hold a ball and allow midfield to support like Khalid Jamlus or Egmar Gonzales then a shorter pass into feet is far better.

If a team retreats and puts 10 players between the ball and their goal it is often difficult to get through a packed defence unless you have great dribbler. Hence you often have to go over the defence to a taller player.

Also we are spoilt by what we see on TV. I wish every Malaysian fan could visit an EPL game and go on the pitch. They would see it’s like a bowling green. In fact NOBODY goes on the pitch between games. Reserves play on smaller grounds and training is done at a separate venue. If you saw the pitches at Liverpool and Manchester Utd training grounds it is a delight to see. The Groundsman which is a highly skilled and valued job treat the pitches like their own gardens. What do we have in Ipoh? A pitch we train on every day, a pitch with 2 types of grass and 4 different weed types (I have counted them) and mushrooms growing. Also any body can use it in any weather and even shot put competitions are held on it, creating huge holes.

So to pass a ball first time (which the great players do, and all the great teams play 1 touch) on our pitch is impossible as it is either bogged in mud or bobbling on the hundred of bumps when dry. Try playing snooker on a ripped table, or table tennis with a cracked ball. Hence it’s not always possible to play attractive flowing football on Ipoh stadium, we in fact play better football at Penang or Shah Alam. The answer for Perak Council? Is qualified groundsmen, a training pitch that is not dangerous and maintenance when needed. This especially applies to our younger players who train in even worse conditions. Fans pay good money and we TRY to play exciting football but it’s not always possible.

SYSTEMS

The best teams are flexible in their systems of play and can change for a match or during a match. At Perak we can either play a 3-1-4-2 or change that quickly to a 3-4-1-2 or a 3-4-3. Also if we are under pressure we can even adopt a 5-3-2. All of which are dependent on the needs of the game and the state of the game. Also it is dependent on the football intelligence of the players, can they “see” when changes are needed. Players in the modern game have to be flexible. See how many Perak players can play in a number of positions.

I am not for or against any system that works! I do not use a 4-4-2. As to play with a back 4 in the correct manner such as Man Utd or Arsenal you have to work every day as a unit and work zones. And as defenders get the highest number of injuries and suspensions you need a minimum of 6 players to play this system. Also to play it properly both full backs must push into mid field when needed, such as Cliché, Neville, Evra or Riise. In Malaysia most teams play with a back 4 and their full backs stay deep. Hence as Perak have more players in midfield we often have numerical superiority in this area. We haven’t done badly with this style, 2nd in MSL down to the last game, Malaysia Cup Final and scored more goals then any other team. What do fans want? Goals.

So in summary I smile when I and the players hear some of the comments about our team’s tactics and systems, most of them are wrong! In fact I don’t actually believe some of these critics go to the game as some of the comments are often so incorrect eg wrong players!

The reality is you win when you are fit, well motivated and can pass the ball well and defend well as individuals. 80% of goals are scored inside the penalty box (check the EPL) and from 1 or 2 touches. So the more often you get the ball in the box and the more players you get in the box you will increase the chances of scoring. Conversely if you can keep the ball out of your penalty box and don’t give away free kicks (set pieces) near your penalty box then you will reduce the goals against.

Simple game isn’t it? And no one is right or wrong that’s what makes it the beautiful game.
